Jake Wood has swapped learning lines for a director's chair in a "very exciting" new project.
The 48-year-old star confirmed in September he is to depart 'EastEnders' towards the end of 2020, and he has already landed a new role - as a director on an as-yet unknown project.
He wrote on Instagram: "Absolutely buzzing to be directing a very exciting project. All will be revealed soon peeps (sic)"
Jake will announce further details of his latest job "soon", and he posted a "sneak peek" of some of the action.
He wrote: "Little sneak peak of our shoot. First time I’ve ever directed and I’m loving it. Very exciting project. All will be revealed soon peeps
"Excited for you all to see what I have directed and helped create this week, all will be announced soon (sic)"
Jake has played Max Branning on the BBC One soap for the last 15 years, and he is "grateful" the door will be left open for the character's potential comeback.
He said: "I've had 15 wonderful years at 'EastEnders' and have made some truly great friends.
"I'll of course miss everyone there but I'm grateful they have left the door open for Max and I'm excited to see what the next chapter holds."
Jon Sen, the show's executive producer, praised the actor's contribution to the soap's success.
He reflected: "Jake is a truly wonderful actor and 'EastEnders' have been extremely lucky to have him for so long.
"We have a big storyline for Max that starts in the coming weeks and we are all very excited to see that play out."
