The 76-year-old actress - who played the Pigeon Lady opposite Macaulay Culkin in 'Home Alone 2: Lost In New York' - will take on the role of Lizzie Meany in the upcoming four-part ITV adaptation of Graham Norton's 2016 debut novel of the same name.

She said in a statement: "I am ecstatic to be part of this wonderful production, in beautiful Skibbereen, and finally not to be playing a mother!

"Mrs. Meany is a bit of a dark horse. She has had a dreadful life but has retained her values, her friendships and most of all her sense of humour, keep a sharp eye on her.”

The script has been written by former 'EastEnders' boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Karen Cogan, and Conleth Hill will play local police officer Sergeant PJ Collins.

The character was previously described as a "gentle mountain of a man, who hides from people and fills his days with comfort food and half-hearted police work".

However, when the body of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke is found, PJ gets called in to solve the first serious crime of his career as he finally has to connect with the village and people he tried to avoid.

Lizzie Meany is "a shy presence in PJ’s life who has been battling her own demons and secrets as PJ comes to discover".

Brenda joins the cast alongside the likes of 'Derry Girls' actress Siobhan McSweeney as Brid Riordan, 'Peaky Blinders' star Charlene McKenna as Evelyn Ross, 'The Virtues' star Helen Behan and Father Ted's Pauline McLynn.

Siobhan added: “I cannot think of a better script in a better place with a better cast and crew. I’m in heaven being back in Cork.”

Filming is currently underway in West Cork, Ireland.
