As newly appointed chairman of the Byrne charity, Lady Byrne makes an impressive impact on her first day as she takes charge at Holby. First on her list is to arrange treatment for Adam Leaf (previously in episode 28). Devastated by the loss of her son, Harry, Lady Byrne does not want Adam to suffer the same fate. Sadly, the funding she arranged was too late and Adam dies during the night leaving Lady Byrne blaming herself for his death.Michael receives a shock as his wife has opened his credit card bill finding the payment for the necklace he gave to Donna. His wife gives him the options of Explain or Dont Come Home! Michael desperately thinks of a plan to cover up his actions and decides to buy an identical necklace for his wife, saying that he had bought it for her as a present and that shes gone and ruined his surprise. This doesnt go down too well with Donna who later sees the identical necklace and storms out of his office, only to be chased after by Michael who lavishes her with more gifts, this time a pair of earrings.Elliot is a witness at a Las Vegas style online wedding service between two teenagers that both urgently need heart replacement surgery. With little time left for them both, the parents are not thrilled with their wedding and they want the two of them to focus on towards getting better. Since Adam has passed away, his heart has become available to one of the pair, Ben. Ben and his father are delighted, but Ben soon realises that Rachaels health is rapidly deteriorating and offers the heart to her. Rachael does not accept the heart, and Ben cant stop his operation, as he is not yet 16 years. This leads to Ben leaving a video suicide note before attempting an overdose to make sure Rachael gets the available heart. With Ben in a critical condition, Connie has no choice left but to offer Rachael the heart. However, as Rachael is 16 years old she can refuse to have the operation. With both families distraught, another heart suddenly becomes available at the very last moment. Ben is rushed into surgery as Rachaels transplant is underway, but the donor heart for Ben doesnt arrive and he dies in surgery. Rachaels heart is also rejected leaving her little chance of survival. With both Ben and Rachael dead, Connie breaks down, blaming herself.Rics personal views on what is classed as essential treatment or surgery are challenged when Michael asks him to perform a tummy tuck on a private patient. After trying to persuade the patient that he does not think she should go ahead with the surgery, she kindly thanks him for his advice, but wants to proceed anyway. Just as he is about to start, he decides this is totally against his principles and walks out of theatre, cancelling the operation. Michael is furious with Ric, pointing out that the patient is a grown woman who can make her own choices. Ric questions what the correct choices actually are. A teenage stab victim is brought into AAU. Due to short staffing, Mark and Kyla are left to unravel the misery. The stab victim is a member of a teenage gang who has been involved in a knife fight leaving another gang member dead. With the girl Ty - now a murder suspect, she is wanted by waiting police for questioning, although she also needs to have surgery. Maddy is still in hot water with Linden after the incident with the kidney patient and Jac, but gives her a second chance to redeem herself by attending to the stabbed victim. Meanwhile Mark questions his career in medicine after a visit from a medical rep. He is tired of being everyones whipping boy.
A girl turns up on AAU claiming to be Tys sister. After Mark lets her into Tys room, things start to turn nasty as she pulls out a knife. Mark walks into the room to find her with the knife and he tries to stop her doing anything stupid. She turns on him but he doesnt get hurt. Instead the girl cuts the oxygen output and makes a run for it. Linden questions Mark over his actions, and this angers Mark as Linden is not being a team player or looking out for his staff. Mark leaves rethinking his life at Holby and he makes a phone call to the medical rep about another job. After a heart to heart with Kyla, he soon realises that Holby is where he needs to stay.Meanwhile Lady Byrne celebrates the fact that she will fund Connies future plans for Holby and that Elliott will be appointed the charitys new Medical Advisor. The charity will also part- fund a new initiative a home from home. A place for patients to be with their families before or after their operations. New research may be the future, but its not the whole story. She wants to make a difference today.
