The Happy Mondays frontman came to the rescue of the TV 'Catchphrase' star when Roy was hit by a huge wave while paddleboarding during filming of their new show '100 Years Younger in 21 days'.

And 77-year-old Roy has told friends that Shaun, 55, saved his life during the terrifying incident in Sardinia.

A source told The Sun: "It was terrifying to watch. Roy was underwater for some time before Shaun got him out. It was a real superhero moment.

"He says without Shaun he might not be alive."

The celebrity line-up for the new series of the ITV show was confirmed earlier this year, with soap legend June Brown, actress Claire King, 'EastEnders' stalwart Sid Owen, actress and presenter Sherrie Hewson, TV personality Sandra Martin and astrologer Russell Grant joining Shaun and Roy.

The show aims to find out if we can stop the aging process and turn back time.

Before embarking on their quest, the celebrities were subjected to scientific testing to discover how well, or badly, they are aging, inside and out.

For 21 days they will commit to a strict diet and exercise routine and be subjected to cutting edge, extreme, anti-aging treatments.

Kate Teckman, commissioning editor, ITV, previously said: "Who doesn't want to turn back the clock and look and feel a bit more youthful? Anti-ageing concerns us all but to find out whether you can roll back the years by experiencing life in the blue zone, we have used leading experts and physicians along with a bunch of brave celebrities prepared to be put through their paces. "

Melissa Brown, executive producer, Wall to Wall, added: "We're thrilled to be working with ITV on this exciting new series, centred on the hot topic of anti-ageing, 100 Years Younger in 21 Days promises laughter, shocking discoveries and some home truths. It's never too late to make changes to our lifestyles and this incredible line-up of game celebrities should inspire us all."
