Academy Award nominee Carol Kane is the latest name to join the Batman-inspired series Gotham, and she's set to appear in a recurring role as the mother of Oswald Cobblepot, the future Penguin.

Gertrud Kapelput is her series name, and the character is described as "a proud and faded beauty with delusions of grandeur" - the first of which we'll see in episode two.

This casting opens up a whole new world for the Gotham bosses to explore, as we can look at the reasons Cobblepot turns out the way he does, turning to a life of crime and looking up Fish Mooney as a 'teacher' of sorts.

Gotham comes to FOX in America this fall, and is waiting on a UK broadcaster to pick it up.
