The breakfast show was just minutes from going live around the country when presenters Ben Shephard, Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh and camera crew were told to evacuate the building immediately after a fire took hold of an office.

A statement released by London Fire Brigade said: "Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers have tackled a small fire at ITV Studios on London's Southbank this morning.

"Part of a post room on the first floor was damaged by fire. The fire meant that 'Good Morning Britain' was taken off air."

No-one was hurt and the fire was put out almost immediately but an investigation has begun into what started the blaze.

Presenter Ben informed viewers what was going on straight away via his social networking site by posting a short video of the production team being evacuated as the alarm bells rang and thick smoked poured out of one of the windows.

The live show was replaced by a pre-recorded special, which no doubt confused viewers, and remained off air until 'Lorraine' began as scheduled at 8:30am.
