Gabby Logan was told she would be too old to be on TV aged 28.
The 47-year-old television presenter has hit out at ageism in the industry after a former boss told her she would be put out to pasture before her 30s.
She told 'The Shift' podcast: "My first boss at Sky, when I used to go in and beg him to do live sport, he told me when I was 23 that I wouldn't be on his screen after the age of 28 - so I've outlived that career.
"My agent at the time said to me, 'You're in such a rush', and I said, 'Well do you wonder when somebody said that to me at 23 years old?' I was going to be hung out to pasture at 28."
Gabby was first offered a job on Sky Sports in 1996 but left just two years later to join ITV as one of a small number of female sports presenters to make the transition to terrestrial television.
She presented the UEFA Champions League coverage before leaving for BBC Sport in 2006 where she covered the FA Cup, World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
Gabby is to return to present the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards with co-hosts Gary Lineker, Alex Scott and Clare Balding on December 20.
The awards show - which recognises numerous sporting achievements, including a titular prize - will take place in Salford later this year, despite the major sporting events, including Wimbledon and the Olympics, being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Instead, the ceremony will recognise the sports stars and teams who triumphed amid the pandemic.
BBC's Director of Sport Barbara Slater said: "As we know, it has been a strange and unprecedented year, but we have still been fortunate enough to see plenty of sporting highlights which we look forward to honouring on the night.
"The 67th BBC Sports Personality of the Year award promises to be another exciting and tough choice for audiences."
