Today (22nd September, 2021), Disney+ revealed the teaser poster, along with some first look images, of an upcoming series about ‘how America got hooked on a lie’.
Disney+ is the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, as well as The Simpsons and a variety of other choices.
Dopesick will premiere on the popular streaming service this November (2021), and stars Michael Keaton (Batman, Spider-Man: Homecoming), Rosario Dawson (Luke Cage, Daredevil), and Will Poulter (We’re the Millers, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch).
From executive producers Danny Strong and Keaton, Dopesick is set to pull apart how one company triggered the worst drug scourge in American history.
The series will guide its viewers to the focal point of America’s struggle with opioid addiction; from the boardrooms of Big Pharma, to an unsettled Virginia mining community, even to the halls of the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency).
Against every single odd stacked up against them, heroes will break through the hardship and embark on a thrilling, intense and hard-hitting journey to take down the corporate forces behind this national crisis; their allies aren’t safe, either.
Dopesick will be a limited series, and is inspired by the New York Times bestselling book titled Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America, written by Beth Macy and published in 2018.
The first look images for Dopesick may not give much away, but they showcase a serious, fully-focused and smartly-created series, as Keaton, Dawson and Poulter all appear to have leaned into their characters easily.
The Times dubbed the book form of Dopesick to be ‘a shocking investigation’; we hope that the adaptation series will bring to the table what Macy’s book did, with perhaps more shock, awe and disbelief.
Dopesick will span eight episodes, each of which is set to be a potentially mind-blowing look at the addiction that plagued America, and caused chaos within the nation.
Keaton, Dawson and Poulter have had noteworthy roles over their careers, with the latter being only young.
Dopesick may test Poulter’s ability to perform in a serious role and, while there is no doubt he will pull it off, it will still be interesting to see the We’re the Millers actor in a tense environment, potentially devoid of comedy.
Dopesick will land on Disney+ on November 12th, 2021 in the UK and Ireland.
