Dominic Cooper has admitted he is interested in playing the lead role in 'Doctor Who'.
The 'Mamma Mia!' star admits the role of the Time Lord intrigues him and he wouldn't rule out taking control of the TARDIS when current incumbent Matt Smith bows out in December.
He said: "What an opportunity it would be."
Despite his interest, Dominic insists he hasn't been contacted about the role by the BBC and hasn't auditioned.
Speaking at the gala screening of his latest film 'Summer in February' on Tuesday night (11.06.13), he told the Daily Express newspaper: "I've heard absolutely nothing of this! It's nice to be thought about though, wherever it came from. It's a very nice acknowledgement."
The 35-year-old actor concedes it will be a hard task replacing Matt - who recently announced he is quitting his role as the Eleventh Doctor after this year's Christmas special - on the show because he has been so brilliant in the sci-fi series.
Dominic added: "Whoever does take it on has a very very hard job. Matt has done such a wonderful, wonderful job with the intriguing, interesting and brave choices he made with him. They're huge shoes to fill."
'Skyfall' star Rory Kinnear has emerged as the favourite to become the Twelfth Doctor, with some bookmakers refusing to take bets on him getting the part.
However, the BBC insist the casting process has only just started and the organisation is adamant they and showrunner Steven Moffat will be taking their time to find the right actor for the role.
A BBC spokesperson told BANG Showbiz: "The Doctor is one of the biggest roles in TV and speculation around the identity of who will be next to step in to the TARDIS is rife, but the search has only just begun so only believe what you hear from us, and that won't be for a while!"
