The 44-year-old actress is best known to audiences for her portrayal of Martha Jones on the third series of BBC sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' but left the UK to work in the US for almost 10 years and upon returning wanted to find a project that was "really English' so was thrilled when she landed the part of Trish in the Sky comedy series.

She told Metro newspaper's SixtySeconds column: "That was absolutely incredible because I'd been in the States and hadn't worked in the UK for about a decade. And so when I made the decision to come home, I was keen to find a project that was really English in its essence. Then this came along and immediately the character resonated with me, because it is the closest to my upbringing and family set-up and community - that I've ever had the opportunity to play. I grew up on an estate and I don't mean to sound clichéd but we didn't lock our doors - so much so that if you were coming out of the bathroom without a towel, you would have to run and duck for cover because the front door could fly open at any point with the neighbours coming in."

The series also featured pop singer Lily Allen in her first acting role and Freema went on to add that she and the 'Smile' hitmaker quickly beame friends as they played on-screen sisters.

She said: "We didn't know each other before and within a couple of weeks, she'd already got me backstage tickets for Shy FX at Notting Hill Carnival, so cheers, Lily Allen! No, she's brilliant - what you see is what you get. She did an absolutely phenomenal job in 'Dreamland' because she has a fearlessness about her and that's going to serve her really well in this."
