David Tennant has been confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor by new 'Doctor Who' showrunner Russell T Davies.
Jodie Whittaker made her final appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor in BBC Centenary Special 'The Power of the Doctor' on BBC One on Sunday night (23.10.22), and viewers were left shocked and surprised when she regenerated into a familiar face, that of Tennant's Tenth Doctor.
Russell has now revealed that this incarnation of the Time Lord is actually the Fourteenth Doctor and he has teased that fans can expect "plenty more surprises" in the three specials coming in November 2023 to mark the sci-fi show's 60th anniversary before Ncuti Gatwa becomes the Fifteenth Doctor.
In a statement, Russell, 59, said: "If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we've got plenty more surprises on the way! The path to Ncuti's Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger, and fun!
"And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We're giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!"
David, 51, is back in 'Doctor Who' along with Catherine Tate, who is reprising her role as the Tenth Doctor's companion Donna Noble.
A teaser broadcast after 'The Power of the Doctor' showed Ncuti, 31, in character as the Time Lord for the first time, shouting in confusion: "Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?"
The 'Sex Education' star's first full episode as the Doctor will air during the festive season in 2023.
'The Power of the Doctor' also featured the return of Jacob Anderson as Vinder, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart, Sacha Dhawan as villain The Master, Patrick O'Kane as Ashad and Janet Fielding and Sophie Aldred as respective classic companions Tegan Jovanka and Ace.
Fans were also treated to appearances from Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor, Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor and David Bradley as the First Doctor, who was originally portrayed by the late William Hartnell.
