The Doctor with Santa and Clara

The Doctor with Santa and Clara

This year's Doctor Who Christmas special is partly inspired by a comic strip which featured the First Doctor.

In 'Last Christmas', Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor endures a terrifying adventure in the North Pole with Santa Claus.

Showrunner Steven Moffat recently revealed he always hoped the Time Lord could meet Father Christmas and said the idea originated from a comic story where William Hartnell's First Doctor meets the festive icon.

Speaking at a Q&A session at a screening of the episode at the BFI in London on Wednesday, December 17, Moffat explained: "(It's not hard to write) from the moment you think, 'What if he met Santa?' There is actually an old comic strip with William Hartnell meeting Santa."

He went on to ask Capaldi if he owned the piece of memorabillia from back in the 60s, to which the actor admitted he hadn't even seen it.

"Call yourself a fan, I do!" Moffat joked.

The adventure will see the Doctor and companion Clara Oswald, with Nick Frost playing Santa.

Moffat admits he couldn't think of anyone more suited to bringing the hero to life on-screen.

"I am a total believer in Santa Claus and Nick Frost who plays Santa Claus looks like Santa Claus and actually if Santa Claus was to choose an earthly name it would actually be Nicholas Frost. I think he might actually be Santa Claus - in fact I think he is!"

'Last Christmas' also stars Nathan McMullen, Natalie Gumede, Faye Marsay and Michael Troughton - the son of Patrick Troughton, who played the Second Doctor.
