The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as we know, is growing and expanding into unknown, yet exciting territory; new characters are breaking through and taking the world by storm. However, some of our original heroes are still here, waiting to have the spotlight shone on them.
Disney+ and Marvel Studios have finally unveiled the trailer and poster for the next Marvel series, Hawkeye. Jeremy Renner is back to play the perfect bowman in his very own adventure, and it looks like an action-packed series set to highlight the hero unlike never before.
Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) made his debut MCU appearance in 2012’s The Avengers; he was controlled by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and forced to help bring about the portal that allowed the Chitauri through to Earth, destroying New York.
Since then, Barton has been in every Avengers movie, making ripples as he went. While some believe him to be a minor or even unimportant character, he is anything but. Without him, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) wouldn’t have lived to save the world numerous times, and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) wouldn’t be the strong, powerful woman she is now.
The trailer for Hawkeye showcases an exciting series, set in post-blip New York City (NYC). Former Avenger, Clint Barton, has a seemingly easy mission: get back to his family when Christmas comes around... but can he make it?
Barton may be able to reunite with his family in time for Christmas with the help of Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a 22-year-old skilled archer who has hopes of becoming a super hero.
The pair must work together when something from Barton’s past threatens to put not only an end to Christmas, but perhaps his life.
The trailer shows a photo within a news clip of Ronin, the personality Barton adopted between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, as he was stricken with grief when his family was turned to dust as a result of The Snap.
In Endgame we saw Barton as Ronin, as he seemed to take out his anger on the Yakuza in Japan, before Romanoff finds him and brings him to the compound.
While Barton has claimed to be retired from being an Avenger before, it seems as though this time, he really means it. Bishop will very likely be taking the mantle of Hawkeye, and we may see a lot more of her going beyond the series.
This is significant, as while the MCU are bringing new characters and old ones together, Hawkeye will be passing the flame on; Barton will be getting one final goodbye, as Bishop, a new character for the MCU, will be taking over.
It seems that Barton and Bishop make a rather good pair, and with his adoration of her skills, we as an audience will be able to welcome her into the MCU, and accept her taking Barton’s place as the archer of the franchise.
With a Christmassy theme, explosions, more one-liners from Barton, and a heartfelt sentiment somewhere in there, it is clear that Hawkeye will be a brilliant series to round off Renner’s involvement in the MCU.
Hawkeye will land on Disney+ on November 24th, 2021.
