Formerly a Manchester United footballer, the sportsman has now joined the team of the property renovation show and is looking to Gary Lineker for inspiration.

He said: "I'm nowhere near the finished article but I've got what it takes. I'm always nervous but being nervous makes you up your game. It's BBC One, it's prime time. I'm a really lucky man and I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm a million miles away from presenters out there. But hey, I'm just learning my trade, you know.

"It's like Gary Lineker. He wasn't so brilliant at the start but he's brilliant now. It's all about listening, learning and walking before you can run, and I intend to do that. No doubt people will be putting hate my way but I've had that for all my life, I'm a strong man. That ain't going to faze me."

And the 45-year-old sports star has been receiving tips from the show's current hosts Martin Roberts and Lucy Alexander.

He added to The Sun newspaper: "Martin and Lucy have been great. They've individually pulled me aside and given me some gems of information.

"Lucy is a football fan, Martin is a busy man doing other stuff."
