‘Derry Girls’ Creator Lisa McGee has joked she nearly "dropped dead" at discovering Martin Scorsese is a big fan of the show.
The Oscar-winning director - who’s behind big motion pictures such as 'Goodfellas’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ – let it slip that he has watched the Channel 4 sitcom.
The Irish screenwriter, 42, took to Twitter to share a clip of Scorsese talking about the show at the Economic Club of Chicago’s annual black-tie dinner.
In the footage, the 80-year-old filmmaker says: “I watched, the other night, Derry Girls? Those nuns!”
Lisa captioned the clip: “Excuse me while I drop dead and actually die a death.”
Siobhan McSweeney, who plays Sister Michael in the series, also shared her disbelief.
She tweeted: “Good morning. I’m ded (sic)"
Comedian Dara O Briain wrote: “And that’s it, you win. Shut it down, people, we have a winner.”
Author David Nicholls added: “Oh my God! The dream. Congratulations, Lisa!”
The teen sitcom, which aired for three seasons from 2018 to 2022, follows the life of four Catholic school girls during the mid 90s, as they attend Our Lady Immaculate College run by a set of nuns in Derry.
It was inspired by Lisa's own experience growing up in Northern Ireland during the final years of The Troubles.
The show, which is now available on Netflix, grew in popularity over the three series and was praised for offering new perspective of The Troubles, a period of violent conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted from late 1960s to 1998.
