The 83-year-old writer called into her employer to speak to co-hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about her pancreatic cancer treatment and admitted the show's fans have given her a real "lift".

Speaking on a live phone link from The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, Denise said: "I'm doing well. All the wonderful nurses and the doctors couldn't be taking any better care of me. Can I just say how much it's meant to me - all the love and support that's come in from all of you - from colleagues, from the viewers, it really is the most enormous help."

Denise is having chemotherapy to help her battle the disease, and thanked the co-hosts for cheering her up.

An emotional Holly said: "It's good to hear you, Denise. And we hope you're going to be popping in soon to see us - we miss you so, so much."

Denise said: "Well I hope you're saving all those hugs for me, Holly?"

Holly replied: "Of course I am, you know I will be!"

Philip asked if Denise had received all their messages of support and she replied: "Yes. Everything is getting through to me and believe me, it's a real lift."

He said: "Well we're so glad and we don't want to take up too much of your time and we don't want to tire you out - we know you've got all sort of treatments and things going on - we just wanted to check in Denise and send all our love..."

Denise replied: "Thank you very much and big love to you."

Denise, who joined the morning show in 1989, had been absent from the programme for a few weeks before her cancer battle was announced on the show on February 19. At the time, Denise said: "I don't plan to give up without a fight."
