The 'Britain's Got Talent' judge, 46, has been asked to present the reboot for two episodes - with the view that it may be extended into a full series - after ITV bosses axed host Griff Rhys Jones in 2016 due to a dramatic plunge in ratings.
A source close to the show told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "Bosses wanted a revamp so decided to get David in.
"They're hoping that it does well in its slot and there could be scope for a full series if the response is positive.
"They know recent reboots on other channels haven't done incredibly well so don't want to make a big song and a dance about it."
The television bloopers show first hit screens in 1977 and was presented by Denis Norden, now 96, until he decided to step down from his role in 2006.
It was then taken over by Griff in 2008 and it was managing to bring in audiences of 18 million but his time fronting the show was cut in 2016 after bosses noticed that people had stopped tuning in to the show - and it's been shelved ever since.
The comedy show - now named 'Return of Alright on the Night - will return for two 45-minute episodes on Monday (02.07.18) and Tuesday (03.07.18) on ITV at 9:15pm.
