David Atherton has won 'The Great British Bake Off'.
The 36-year-old international health adviser has been crowned the winner of this year's series of the Channel 4 baking competition, after beating Steph Blackwell and Alice Fevronia to the number one spot during Tuesday's (29.10.19) final episode.
David was believed to be the underdog of the three finalists, as he was the only one of the trio to have never been crowned Star Baker during the series.
The amateur baker achieved victory by impressing the judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with his picnic-themed showstopper, claiming that that he'd "saved the best til last".
In the final, the bakers were tasked with making the ultimate chocolate cake for the signature challenge, before moving on to a twice baked stilton soufflé for the challenging technical.
But in the end, the decision as to who walked away with the 'Bake Off' crown came down to the showstopper, in which they had to create an illusion picnic basket using only cake, sweet bread, and biscuit.
During the signature, David opted for a chocolate Armagnac and prune cake with a mirror glaze, which the judges claimed looked beautiful, but tasted a little too strongly of Armagnac for their tastes.
However, after he emerged victorious in the technical challenge - with Alice coming in second, and Steph finishing last - it was all to play for going in to the final challenge.
For his showstopper, David crafted peaches out of spiced bread, cheese out of lemon cake, and sausage rolls out of fig rolls, to create the perfect picnic sculpture.
