Danny John-Jules felt he needed to improve on 'Death in Paradise' after he watched Ben Miller perform.
The 'Red Dwarf' actor plays Dwayne Myers, one of a group of British policeman on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie, in the BBC One comedy-drama and admits he felt he should up his game after watching his co-star - who portrays main character, Detective Inspector Richard Poole - in action.
He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "When you watch him at work it makes you think, 'Bloody hell, Ben's got his character down.'
"But you also don't want to outshine the character who has been written as the lead because you end up overworking. It could look quite pushy on the screen and your character becomes a bit forced.
"Whereas, I always found there's that space that your character fits into, so you've got to find that space and the boundaries of that space."
While Danny admits filming the series on the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe certainly has its luxuries, he soon got tired of the hot weather after just a fortnight.
He added: "The hot weather loses its edge in about two weeks, then you suddenly realise you've got to go and hold an hour-long drama together and the weather can't help you.
"There's a lot of distraction when you're in the middle of a paradise island in the Caribbean, but you've still go to be on point at seven o'clock in the morning."
The new series of 'Death in Paradise' starts on Tuesday January 14 at 9pm on BBC One.
