The 46-year-old ‘Football Factory’ actor played pub landlord Mick Carter on the BBC soap for nearly a decade from 2013 but is now filming a Sky series ‘Mr Bigstuff’, which sees him playing a prescription drug addict called Lee – who carries his dead dad’s ashes around in a biscuit tin and turns his little brother Glen and fiancée Kirsty’s into chaos when he returns from being on the run.
Danny told The Sun about his latest role: “Following my nutty (‘EastEnders’) exit, I feel like it’s time to recalibrate and try something new.
“I was honoured to be asked to develop an exciting character and explore his dysfunctional family.”
Danny’s upcoming six-parter for Sky is due to air in spring, and was written by ‘Brassic’ actor Ryan Sampson, who plays Tommo in the Sky One comedy and also stars as Lee’s brother Glen in ‘Mr Bigstuff’.
He added about the show: “As a particularly short, gay dude, I’m fascinated by masculinity – by all the ways that we're trying and failing to do it right.
“Maybe it’s because of some unresolved short-man issues.
“I probably should have got therapy, but instead I’ve written a show about it. And I’m lucky in having Danny joining me for the ride.”
Danny has said he quit ‘EastEnders’ in Christmas 2022 as he found what turned out to be his character’s final plotline bizarre.
Mick appeared to die on Christmas Day after his new wife Janine Butcher had driven his ex-wife Linda Carter into the sea.
The Queen Vic bar owner went in to save her but seemingly got into difficulty and was presumed dead and lost at sea.
Danny told the Daily Mirror about his time on the soap: “The first few years we smashed it. It was powerful.
“The viewer listened to us more than these politicians.
“I was blessed with some amazing storylines, some (bad) ones as well. They (messed) it up towards the end.
“It’s a shame it had to come to an end but I’d had enough.”
