'Dancing On Ice' champion Sonny Jay has claimed Faye Brookes "totally deserved to win".
The Capital Radio DJ - who topped the public vote and triumphed alongside pro partner Angela Egan on Sunday (14.03.21) - has weighed in after some fans insisted the 'Coronation Street' actress should been crowned the victor, admitting he agrees with them as he thinks she is a phenomenal skater.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Sonny said: "Faye totally deserved to win. She’s amazing.
"She’s a brilliant ice skater. She’s a lovely person. But it went my way I guess."
The 27-year-old star described Faye as his "biggest competition" en route to the final, but explained to anyone complaining that it came "down to the public vote".
He added: "Faye was my biggest competition from the start. I said it from the very beginning. She came out in our first week and she absolutely smashed it.
"I thought she was going to win. But look, it all comes down to the public vote. It’s just one of those things.
"If those people wanted Faye to win, after the public vote I couldn’t do anything about it."
The series was a unique one, with most injuries than any year in the past, as a number of stars were forced to pull out before the final.
Of all the contestants who had to leave early, Sonny was gutted to see Jason Donovan leave due to back pain.
He said: "I can’t believe I was even doing the show with Jason Donovan. That in itself was pretty cool.
"People love him, and because it’s all down to a public vote you just genuinely don’t know where it’s gonna go. Jason could have been in the final, you just can’t tell."
Speaking after the result was announced over the weekend, Sonny told viewers: “That is mental. Thank you so much.”
‘Corrie’ star Faye finished in second place with her partner Matt Evers, and said she was happy to have made it to the final as she congratulated the champion on his win.
She said: “All I wanted to do was get here. I did it as a personal challenge, I’ve made it here, and [the trophy] couldn’t have gone to a better guy.”
