Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean have announced their retirement.
The figure skating duo received the highest-ever score of all time and took the Gold at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics following their Bolero routine but on the 40th anniversary of their victory, they have decided it is time to hang up their skates for good following a farewell tour in April next year.
Speaking on ITV's 'Good Morning Britain' on Wednesday (14.02.24), Christopher explained: "Well, 40 years ago...it's a long time. And next year, in 2025, we have been skating together for 50 years and we felt that was a really nice round number to say that we have had a wonderful time and it is time to hang up our skates and no more touring, except for the last tour that we're hoping to do next year."
Jayne - who has been married to Phil Christensen since 1990 and has Kieran and Jessica with him - added that the tour will be a "celebration" of everything that they have been through since starting their careers together and Christopher revealed that even though it is Valentine's Day, they actually wish each other a "Happy Bolero Day" in honour of their triumph with the routine that was set to the classic piece of music byt French composer Maurice Ravel.
Outside of their career in the rink, Jayne and Christopher have become regular faces on the judging panel of ITV skating show 'Dancing on Ice', and in recent years have seen celebrities such as gymnast Nile Wilson, dancer Regan Gascoigne and Capital FM DJ Sonny Jay take the crown on the show but also tend to perform themselves numerous times per series.
It is not known if the duo will continue in their roles following the current series but Christopher - who has Jack,25, and Sam, 23, with fellow figure skater Jill Trenary but is now in a relationship with Karen Barber - revealed his plans to buy a motorhome and go around the UK in it.
He said: "My partner Karen has always wanted a motorhome so we’re going to go motorhoming. I had one when I lived in America. It was 31ft long, and it was a nightmare, but my kids loved it.
"This will be a lot smaller and we want to drive around the UK, especially Scotland, because we haven’t seen a lot of it."
