Dame Helen Mirren wants a "gay, black female" Doctor in 'Doctor Who'.

The Oscar-winning actress - who is one of the stars tipped to replace 11th Doctor Matt Smith when he bows out of the BBC sci-fi drama later this year - insists she will "absolutely not" take on the role, but would love to see another female play the famous TV Time Lord.

Speaking on ITV's 'Daybreak' this morning (03.07.13), she said: "I'm not going to be the first female Doctor Who. No, no, no, absolutely not. I absolutely wouldn't contemplate that. But I do think it's well over-time to have a female Doctor Who."

The 67-year-old star went on to suggest that the new Doctor - who has been played solely by Caucasian males in the past - should be the antithesis of previous incarnations of the character.

She added: "I think a gay, black female Doctor Who would be the best of all."

Fellow actress Olivia Colman - who recently wowed audiences in crime drama 'Broadchurch' - has also been linked to play the time-travelling Doctor, as have 'Skyfall' actor Ben Whishaw and 'Homeland' actor David Harewood.

David recently said he would love to play the first black Doctor and would make the character a "badass".

He said: "I would like to make this guy a bit of a badass if I was to do it."
