Conchita Wurst opens up about coming out

The 33-year-old drag queen - who shot to fame when he won the 'Eurovision Song Contest' for Austria in 2014 - has opened up about his early years and joked he has been "out" as gay since he was six months old.

He said: "I think it was six months after my mother gave birth to me! There was just no question about it. I did come out officially to my parents when I was about 17 but it wasn't a big surprise.

"I wore a female bodysuit to a workout class in kindergarten. I did that once.

"I was not prepared for the backlash. Every teenager has their struggles growing up and, of course, it is a whole different story when you are queer and your peers see that. Kids can be frightening and I did not dare go to the bathroom during lunch break. But I got more confident with my opinions and my look as I got older."

The 'Rise Like a Phoenix' singer - whose real name is Thomas Neuwirth - identifies as a gay man and went on to explain why Pride Month is "so important", noting that the world will be "much happier" if everyone was allowed to be themselves.

He told Metro's Sixty Seconds column: "[Pride Month] important to raise awareness. Until the day we reach equality, there is a need to parade and march the streets, and stand up for our visibility and our place in society.

"To me, being proud is to do with oneself. If you know yourself and love yourself, you are a happy human being and you become at peace with the world and other people."
