The popular television series made a triumphant return to ITV earlier this month after a 13-year hiatus but, although viewers are only two episodes in to the current series, Robert Bathurst - who portrays David Marsden in drama - has hinted that another installment could be on the way.

Speaking on 'BBC Breakfast' on Thursday (15.09.16), Robert said: "They [the producers] will see how things run - but it's certainly looking good.

"People seem to be enjoying it. We are optioned for another one but there's no commitment to that. That's it - this series may be it, it may be not."

However, although he has high hopes for another series, the 59-year-old actor isn't getting excited just yet.

He added: "We always assumed it would be the last one."

Meanwhile, Robert isn't the only member of the cast who is desperate to get the show recommissioned as James Nesbitt - who plays Adam Williams - would also like to do another batch of episodes with his co-stars later this year.

He said: "I think we were all very anxious, secretly. It went very well. Another series would be great. The funny thing about being in 'Cold Feet' originally was that I couldn't really enjoy it, because I was in it. But when I watched it this week I loved watching the other characters. It was good."

Meanwhile, the show's writer Mike Bullen previously revealed he asked Helen Baxendale - who played the late Rachel Bradley - to return to her role but she declined.

He explained: "I'm quite sentimental. I wanted to find a way of doing 'Cold Feet' with the original six ... I sent that script to Helen to say, 'Do you want to do it?' She was very sweet about the script but she said, no, it wasn't for her.

"I'm pleased she did because it was the right decision both for her and the show. I was clinging to something that we needed to let go of. But Rachel was such a key part of the show and to all those characters."
