The 63-year-old soccer pundit has taken to Twitter to reveal details of his diagnosis, but has reassured fans that he's currently "on the mend" after being informed that he has an underactive thyroid gland.
The former Leeds United star wrote on the micro-blogging platform: "Having suffered in silence myself for 18 months, I am now one month on after finding out my problem is Hypothyroidism! With medication I am on the mend [smiling emoji] Really brought it home 2me that nobody knows what’s going on inside your head unless you tell somebody #MentalHealthAwareness (sic)"
Chris previously revealed he'd undergone a scan amid concerns he was in the early stages of dementia.
The retired sportsman feared he'd developed "brain fog", caused by heading the ball during his playing days.
However, after undergoing tests, Chris was told the doctors "didn’t find anything".
He added: "After the blood test I had, I’ve got an underactive thyroid.
"I’m suffering with a swollen tongue which causes you to slur your words, slows down, not your thoughts because the thoughts are there, but transferring those thoughts to the mouth to get you to talk coherently.
"All that sort of stuff. Feeling cold, even warm days you’re shivering and cold, weakness, muscle fatigue, tiredness."
Chris' health issues emerged after he made an appearance on 'The One Show'.
He explained: "I was on with Alex Jones and Michael Ball, I did the menu for the show live and not a problem,” he said.
"Michael Ball talked to me about the Christmas album and said, ‘Name some of the songs’, and my mind had gone completely blank and I couldn’t think of anything.
"That was the first time my wife said to me: ‘There’s something not quite right, you need to get it checked out’."
