The TV show has aired on the network for seven years but failing ratings are said to have led TV bosses to finally pull the plug after this summer's show.

A source told the Daily Star Sunday: "'After months of discussion it has been decided to axe 'Celebrity Big Brother'.

"Ratings have dropped for the past few series so it isn't worth the hefty price tag."

There was previous speculation back in January that the show - hosted by TV presenter Emma Willis - was in danger, after the last series drew in only 1.9 million viewers.

An insider said at the time: "'There have been conversations between the execs about not renewing the contract for both 'Big Brother' and 'Celebrity Big Brother'. It would be the end of an era but they feel the time is right to end.

'There is still time for the bosses at Channel 5 to change their mind but it is not looking likely. Even if they drop it, another channel or a streaming service may decide to pick it up in the future.'

The TV programme's latest series will begin on Friday 17 August, with a host of controversial stars rumoured to be among the contestants.

Adult actress Stormy Daniels, 'Love Island's Gabby Allen, Duchess Meghan's half-sister Samantha Markle, former TV presenter Josh Leslie, 'Cheers' actress Kirsty Alley and former 'TOWIE' star Dan Osborne have all been listed as potential housemates.
