Captain Sir Tom Moore's grandson has backed calls for a statue in honour of his late grandfather.
The war veteran - who passed away this week, aged 100, from coronavirus and pneumonia - raised more than £32 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden, after initially setting a fundraising target of £1,000, and his grandson Tom Teixeira admits he would welcome a statue of his relative.
Speaking about the possibility, he said: "I don't think we're expecting anything like that but it's nice to think that people would like to do that for our grandfather. I can see it happening, and it would be very nice to have a memory like that and we can all go visit and pay our respects."
And Tom has revealed his grandfather was not only a "war hero and a fundraising machine", but also a "family man" and never expected a "big fuss" over anything.
Speaking to ITV's Good Morning Britain on Thursday (04.02.21), he said: "There was a few moments and I'm going to cherish those moments because it just shows you the love towards him and so many people come up to you and ask you, 'What's it like being a grandson?'"I don't think that was covered as much so it's nice to be able to talk about it now and to give a sense of what a family man he was. And not just a war hero and a fundraising machine, as an actual family man too.
"I think growing up that was exactly what he was like. He didn't expect anything or a big fuss to be made over anything. "Throughout this whole time and all the events that have happened, he's always true to himself. He's a typical Yorkshire man - we get on with it, we move forward and take each day as it comes and live life to the fullest. That's exactly what he was about."
