While the wait for Broadchurch is one that has everybody on edge, ITV have this weekend released the entire first scene from the upcoming third and final series. Clocking in at two-and-a-half minutes, it’s a short affair, but one that definitely quenches the first a little bit ahead of the premiere later this month.

In the clip, which you can see above, we meet Julie Hesmondhalgh’s character Trish, weeping at the scene of a sexual assault in which she was the victim. The authorities are there with her and at once, DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) begins dishing out orders, demanding to know why the victim is sat on the cold steps outside following her attack. Introducing herself to Trish before moving her to the car where she meets David Tennant’s DI Alec Hardy.

Immediately viewers are catapulted right back into the world of Broadchurch; a place that was once a quiet coastal town, but now houses the memories that include the murder of a young boy and now, a fresh new crime that threatens to throw everybody into disarray once more.

Speaking about the plot previously, Hesmondhalgh said: “I suppose the hardest thing is the responsibility you feel. You do want to get it right, because you’re representing a group of people who are actually going through something for real, and we wanted to show that in the best and truest way we can.”

Tennant opened up more about the new series, explaining: “It couldn’t be another body on another beach, that wouldn’t have the truthfulness that I think you’ve come to expect from the series.

“So beyond that, you just kind of travel in trust that Chris [Chibnall, creator] is going to produce something that is sensitive and appropriate, and also a stonking piece of drama. It’s a different type of story, but it’s the same world.”

Broadchurch returns to ITV on Monday, February 27 at 9pm.
