'Mrs Brown's Boys' was the most-watched programme on Christmas Day (25.12.13) with 9.4 million viewers.

Brendan O'Carroll's BBC comedy achieved its highest-ever rating and even outdid the seasonal special of 'Doctor Who' and Danny Dyer's 'EastEnders' debut.

Brendan's cast mate Rory Cowan told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It had a couple more million than 'EastEnders' which means that people were actually switching on to see it. That's fabulous!"

It was also a good showing for 'Doctor Who', which averaged at 8.3 million but had the highest peak with an audience of 10.2 million.

A lot of people tuned in to see departing Time Lord Matt Smith 'regenerate' into his successor Peter Capaldi.

The actor passed the torch in the festive episode, and he has recently explained while he has had a "wonderful" time on the show and found it difficult to leave after four years, he knew it was time to move on.

He has said: "You know, I figured its been four years - the best four years - and its been wonderful, but I think when you've got to go you've got to go.

"It's sad and I'm going to miss it. It wasn't an easy decision to come to."
