Ben McKenzie will play Commissioner Jim Gordon in a brand new television spin-off based on the origins of Batman.
'The O.C.' star has been cast in new FOX drama 'Gotham', which follows the adventures of Batman's police force ally in his younger years as an upstart detective working for the Gotham Police Department.
The TV show will centre on Gordon and some of Gotham City's most notable villains from the Batman comic books and films. A pre-teen Bruce Wayne will also feature in the series, following the famous superhero's formative years until he eventually becomes caped crusader Batman.
Gary Oldman most recently played Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan's smash hit 'The Dark Knight' movie trilogy, while Christian Bale played Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Ben is best known for his role as bad boy Ryan Atwood in hit teen drama 'The O.C.' and has spent the past several years playing a police officer in US drama 'Southland'.
'Gotham' is being produced and written by Bruno Heller, the man behind hit Channel 5 show 'The Mentalist'.
The new drama has already been commissioned for a full series and is expected to premiere on FOX later this year.
