The BBC are already in talks for a second season of 'Vigil'.
The broadcaster's new thriller - which is from the makers of 'Line of Duty' and 'Bodyguard' - was their most watched show over the bank holiday weekend, pulling in 5.6million viewers for the first episode on Sunday (29.08.21) and 5.4million on Monday (30.08.21) so they are keen to capitalise on its early popularity and commission further episodes.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “The Beeb knew they had a hit on their hands.
“So they’ve been in discussion for some time with its creators, World Productions, about a potential follow-up.
“Now those plans are likely to progress at speed, with a view to 'Vigil II' being commissioned."
The six-episode saga sees Suranne Jones' DCI Amy Silva sent to HMS Vigil to investigate the death of a crew member but there's no guarantee the 'Gentleman Jack' star will return for the second series.
The insider added: “It remains to be seen whether Suranne will return, as 'Vigil’s makers aren’t afraid to kill off a central character.”
The 42-year-old actress recently admitted the role was the toughest of her career to date because it was so physical.
Suranne - who performed her own stunts on the show - reflected: "When I first read the script, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this sounds amazing - I get to do all these stunts!’
"But I forgot how old I was. I thought I was 23 when I was reading it, and that’s not true any more. So I had to do a lot of working out just to build up my strength in order to do those scenes.
"I got whiplash, I put my back out a couple of times and I was covered in bruises. Every time I went home, my husband was like, ‘What the hell have they done to you now?’
"But it was fun to do and I watch the finished series and go, ‘Oh, Amy’s great!’ But I was hobbling home and having Epsom salt baths during filming."
