Kate Winslet shows off award
Costume drama Downton Abbey and Luther actor, Idris Elba also scooped a gong at the 69th annual awards ceremony held in Los Angeles.
Presented for the third consecutive year by Ricky Gervais, the comedian toned down his controversial jokes after poking fun last year at Hollywood heavyweights including Johnny Depp. He did however make a few sly remarks including opening the show with a ‘warning’ he had received from the organisers; “[if I] offend any viewers, or cause any controversy whatsoever , they will definitely invite me back next year as well.”
Downtown Abbey, ITV’s lavish saga about the upper-class Crawley family won the award for best miniseries showing its success on both sides of the Atlantic. While the star of BBC crime drama Luther, Idris Elba, was honoured with Best Actor in a TV movie.
Kate Winslet dedicated her award to her two children, saying in her acceptance speech; “I share this with my beautiful children Mia and Joe who light up my life every day, I'm so proud to their mum.”
Other big winners of the night include silent film The Artist, which won Best Motion picture for a comedy or musical and George Clooney who beat off competition from Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio to win Best Actor award for his role in The Descendants.
In another nod to the British, Meryl Streep bagged the Best Actress award for her portrayal of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. The actress thanked; “Everybody in England that let me come and trample all over their history.”
