Andrew Lincoln has for years now taken on the leading role of Rick Grimes in AMC’s zombie apocalypse show, The Walking Dead. Adapted from the Robert Kirkman comic book series of the same name, it’s managed to garner a huge fanbase and following, becoming one of the most-watched and talked about shows on the small screen.

Now in its seventh season, viewers who have remained loyal with the show have seen a lot of violence, grit and drama take place, but Lincoln has spoken to EW about how the tone of the show will be shifting during the seventh season’s second half.

He explained: “It’s probably the opposite of what you just witnessed. Certainly from Rick’s point of view. You see a man in action again with some of the members of his closest family. There’s a lot more levity, if you can believe that, than you’ve ever seen before in Mr. Grimes. There’s sort of a freedom in him, a feeling that comes from losing everything, and also the thrill of the fight. It’s the thrill of the fight again. He’s back in. All I’m saying is that the band is back together.

“There are several episodes that I loved being involved in and it certainly feels very much more like a show that I knew and recognised in the back eight. I loved the episodes that I was in. It’s The Magnificent Seven in the back half. Rather, the magnificent eight episodes. Wait till [episode] 16. I promise you, there is one beat in 16, I dropped my script and started punching the air and did a little jig.”

Though we know Jeffrey Dean Morgan is bringing his villainous character Negan to the show in season 8, the fact that Rick Grimes looks to be making moves to ensure he’s no longer under his thumb doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. He has after all managed to conquer everything in his path to-date, despite losing many friends and associates along the way.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC in the US and FOX in the UK on February 12/13 respectively.
