The first-ever live-action version of the 'She-Ra' series is in the works at Amazon Studios.
'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' is in its very early development stages and no writer is attached as of yet, but it has been reported that studio giant Dreamworks will serve as executive producers for the standalone story.
Variety reports: "No writer is currently attached. DreamWorks Animation will serve as an executive producer after recently producing the Netflix animated series “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.”
The show will reportedly not follow the existing series canon and will not be canon to the original animated series.
News of the live-action production comes just three years after 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' was rebooted as an animated series for Netflix.
She-Ra was created as a heroic character for girls following the huge global success of the 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' cartoon series and Mattel toy line. The character first appeared in 1985 in the animated series 'She-Ra: Princess of Power' and later in a compilation film 'He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword' that same year.
She-Ra was rebooted in 2018 and updated for a modern audience, incorporating LGBTQ+ issues.
Show creator Noelle Stevenson spoke out about the importance of representation at the time.
She said: "There weren’t characters who were outwardly gay or lesbian. There’s nothing inappropriate about being gay and living your life. This is something we need to represent and show in as many different ways as possible."
She later went on to claim that the story of 'She-Ra' is a difficult one to tell because it "goes against" ideas of heroism.
She told IndieWire: "It’s a difficult story to tell because it goes against what our idea of heroism is, especially [for] women who are expected to sacrifice everything.”
