The 40-year-old comedian has admitted he used to be wracked with worry when he'd leave his partner Paul Drayton - who has since become sober - alone in the house because he knew he'd be busy knocking back the booze and getting himself legless.

Speaking on 'Loose Women' on Monday (12.12.16), he said: "Living with an alcoholic, it's not like Patsy in 'Ab Fab', they have really dark moments. You leave the house and you don't know what you're going to come back to, or whether they're okay."

And, although the former 'Chatty Man' host managed to help Paul get his life back on track, he'll never forget the mixed emotions he felt before he had to carry on with work.

He explained: "He'd been to rehab a couple of times. Paul came to me a while ago and he told me 'I need help now.' He kept saying to me, my life is out of control. He's fine now, he's sorted. I've been in bits before I stepped on stage but you have to get on with it. Sometimes it actually helps, It is like a tonic, you need the applause."

Alan may be used to gulping down alcoholic beverages on screen but he has decided to ban all bottles from his home in a bid to keep Paul on the straight and narrow.

He explained: "It's done me good [giving up alcohol]."

Paul proposed to Alan in Indonesia in September and the pair have already decided they want their close friend Adele to perform at the wedding.

Alan said recently: "The engagement only happened last week so I don't know exactly what we'll do. But a big old wedding and we'll get Adele singing 'Someone Like You'."
