The 46-year-old comedian was rumoured to be in the running to replace David Walliams on the ITV talent show's panel before the role ultimately went to former 'Strictly Come Dancing' judge Bruno Tonioli.

Asked if there was any truth to the speculation, he told Metro.co.uk: "I was staying at home – I’m doing a sitcom based on my life – and I was just watching this all unfurl in the paper, it was very odd.

"And then Bruno [was announced as the new judge] and I thought, 'oh good for him', but it’s so weird.

"And then family and friends apparently said I was devastated. I’m like, I’m just sitting at home doing a jigsaw."

Bruno, 67, was confirmed as David's replacement last month as his new job was also revealed during clips of the taping of the first auditions for the new series of ‘BGT’.

Hosts Ant and Dec welcomed Bruno into the London Palladium auditorium alongside fellow judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.

A clip of the taping posted on Twitter saw Dec telling fans: “Please give a huge London Palladium welcome to your four judges for this afternoon. They are Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli!”

Ant added: “First of all, before we get underway, can we say a massive welcome to Bruno!”

He said in a statement: "Here we are, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. I am so excited. It’s my first show, I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I’m sure it’s going to be brilliant."

Bruno has been filming auditions at The London Palladium alongside fellow panellists Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Simon Cowell, who may need to "throw out the rulebook" due to Bruno's antics.

Amanda recently said: "He’s a wonderful ball of energy and in a good way he’s already broken every rule.

"So much so that Simon will probably have to throw out any rulebook this year.

"It’s going to be a brilliant series. We’ve only filmed auditions in London so far but we can't wait to get to Manchester for the first time since the pandemic hit."
