Aidan Turner is to star as Leonardo da Vinci in a new drama.
The 'Poldark' actor will play the famed painter in a new series for Amazon Prime Video, alongside a stellar cast of Freddie Highmore, Giancarlo Giannini, Matilda De Angelis, Carlos Cuevas and James D’Arcy.
Of the painter - who is known for a multitude of work including the Mona Lisa - Aidan said: "As we know, Leonardo Da Vinci was a man who created an incredible body of work across so many disciplines. As an actor, to explore the inner workings of this great artist was a very exciting and humbling experience and I feel so fortunate to have worked with such a great team in Rome to make this series happen."
Whilst Martin Backlund, Head of Content at UK Prime Video, added: "Leonardo is a beautiful drama that tells a riveting backstory of one of the most fascinating artistic figures in history.
"I know our customers will be absorbed from the first episode and we can’t wait to see Aidan Turner back on our screens exclusively to Prime Members in the UK and Ireland."
Giancarlo Giannini will play Leonardo's master, Andrea del Verrocchio, whilst Matilda De Angelis will play da Vinci's friend Caterina da Cremona. Freddie Highmore will play Stefano Giraldi as the investigator at the centre of the mystery, Carlos Cuevas plays Salaì, the apprentice of Leonardo, and James D'Arcy will star as Ludovico Sforza. Frank Spotnitz and Steve Thompson created the series, which has been directed by Dan Percival and Alexis Sweet.
