Marvel is, as we know, knocking it out of the park this year with content. In the midst of the many amazing films we’ve been promised, such as Black Widow, Marvel and Disney are stepping it up a notch by focusing their attention on the small screen as well.
So far this year (2021), we’ve had the phenomenal series that was WandaVision, then the hard-hitting journey of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and in June Loki will be hitting Disney+. However, not all the shows we’re getting this year are live-action; on May 21st, animated series M.O.D.O.K will be on the streaming platform as a Star Original, (in the UK and Canada) and on Hulu in the United States.
M.O.D.O.K, who will be voiced by Patton Oswalt in the series, is a Marvel comic book character with an odd backstory. The short version, if we look at the comics, is that George Tarleton was turned into a living computer by the Scientist Supreme, and became M.O.D.O.C – Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing, to help them build the Cosmic Cube.
However, having gained unrestricted power, M.O.D.O.C decided to take revenge and wipe out the Scientist Supreme; he then dubbed himself M.O.D.O.K – Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.
In regard to the show, it doesn’t seem like we will be seeing this backstory, but anything could happen! The trailer doesn’t hint at M.O.D.O.K’s origin, so perhaps it simply isn’t significant, or we may just see it later down the line.
The series is set to focus on the killer Organism as he struggles with financial issues at his company, A.I.M (Advanced Idea Mechanics), as it appears he has run it into the ground. It seems that M.O.D.O.K’s work life isn’t the only thing stressing him out; it appears that he has a family, and must not only balance his work and home life, but also the pressing failure of fighting Earth’s mightiest heroes.
M.O.D.O.K has wished to take over the world for a long time now, and unfortunately (for him, of course), it doesn’t seem to be going so well. There is sometimes nothing funnier than a villain trying to be harsh and scary, but only turning out to be mildly alarming; this is a great theme to combine with humour and brutality.
The series definitely seems to be taking a comical direction, which is helped along by the fact that the series is animated. Plus, Oswalt is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as he was in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D as the Koenig brothers. His brilliant performance will definitely bring M.O.D.O.K to life as a villain who just can’t seem to get anything right.
So, the Mental Organism appears to have a lot of balls in the air, and the show seems to mix comedy and violence within an animated series which, if the trailer is anything to go by, will be a hilarious adventure!
All episodes of M.O.D.O.K. will arrive on Hulu on May 21st in America. In the UK and Canada, the series will release one episode a week starting from May 21st, onto Disney+ as a Star Original series.
