New research in from British Gas which questioned 2,002 UK adults who celebrate Christmas has revealed that over three quarters (78%) of families in the UK will watch a television special on Christmas Day this year, with Mrs Brown's Boys coming in as the show of choice.
Most patriotic are the Londoners, with 39% watching the Queen's Speech, whilst Downton Abbey is more popular with those over 55 (37%), whilst millennials will enjoy watching EastEnders (27%).
British Gas Smart Energy Expert Samantha Darville comments: "With a big dinner to cook, children to entertain and a packed TV schedule to navigate, Christmas can feel like one of the busiest days of the year!
"With lots of people at home it can be easy to lose track of how much energy you're using and on what. But with smart meters, you can check your smart energy monitor which shows you how much energy is being used in pounds and pence."
The top Christmas TV shows according to the study were as follows:
- Mrs Brown's Boys
- The Queen's Speech
- Downton Abbey
- Coronation Street
- Strictly Come Dancing Special
- EastEnders
- Doctor Who
- Call The Midwife
- Emmerdale
- News programmes
Further insight from British Gas found that household electricity usage peaks on Christmas Day at midday, with ovens cooking Christmas Dinner, and people playing with the new gadgets they may have received.
With busy mornings and afternoons rife, we all manage to put our feet up in the evening and settle down to watch the telly, using less electricity than usual, likely to leave cleaning and washing up until the morning.
