The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has always exceeded expectations, and now, with the Marvel and Disney+ originals really taking off, there is one series that fans are keen to know more about.
First came WandaVision, a stunning show following Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and her mechanical man, Vision (Paul Bettany). The Falcon and The Winter Soldier followed suit with Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) taking on a new enemy. The next show to arrive on Disney+ is Loki; Tom Hiddleston stars as the titular baddie as he is called upon to fix time. Loki will hit the streaming service next week on June 9th, 2021.
In August 2021, we will see a totally new type of show; Marvel’s What If... series (which contains 10 episodes) will take pivotal moments from the franchise’s history and change them in exciting ways. Here, we list the episodes we know to be confirmed, and some that are not yet set in stone; check them out below!
Peggy Carter took the Super Soldier serum
We all know Captain America, aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), took the super soldier serum in his first movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, to aid the US military in World War II but, what if it wasn’t him that took it...
The first episode in the upcoming Marvel show will change the moment that Rogers took the serum, and make it so that his love interest, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), took it instead.
Images and clips we’ve seen have shown Carter to have donned a suit in the same style to Rogers’, but with a British twist. Carter will, of course, be utilising a shield just as Cap has been doing for years.
The suit Carter is wearing in what we’ve seen so far has led some fans to believe that she is a gender-swapped version of Captain Britain, a popular hero from the comics who is yet to be introduced into the MCU.
Rogers will not be left out as his skinny self will be aiding Miss Carter in her missions; it seems that he will be wearing an oversized Iron Man suit, potentially created by Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper); what an interesting first episode!
T'Challa is Star-Lord, rather than Peter Quill
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, it was explained that in the 80s, Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his team of Ravagers took Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) from his home on Earth just after his mother had died, at the instruction of Quill’s father, Ego (Kurt Russell).
Quill grows up to become the childish leader of the Guardians, as Yondu didn’t deliver Peter to his father as he was told. What if, instead of Quill being picked up, the Ravagers took T’Challa instead?
The second episode of Marvel’s What If... will show what would happen if somehow, the Ravagers took T’Challa from his home, who is known in the MCU as Black Panther. It seems unclear at the moment how Yondu and his team end up taking T’Challa; could it be possible that they simply ended up in Wakanda by mistake?
How T’Challa will be different to Quill remains to be seen, but it will definitely be intriguing to find out!
Winter Soldier VS. Marvel Zombies
Marvel Zombies is a Marvel comics miniseries from the 2000s, set in an alternate universe in which the heroes of the MCU are turned into zombies (cool, right?).
The Winter Soldier (Stan) seems to be unaffected by the virus that has taken hold of The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, and even Galactus; Bucky Barnes will potentially have to fight off the undead members of the MCU, including his old friend Steve Rogers.
Despite a trailer for the episode showing a fight between Barnes and the undead Captain America, there are still many questions fans want answering: Will Bucky be fighting alone? Will Bucky live through the episode?
Hopefully, all questions will be answered when we see the incredible battle seemingly between just Bucky, and zombified members of the MCU.
Other What If... ideas
While the following episode ideas are not confirmed, fans are still enjoying thinking up some awesome ideas for what Marvel’s animated series could offer.
One idea is that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) doesn’t become Spider-Man; however, the young character is still determined to be a hero, so he wields a bow and arrow and becomes Hawkeye instead. Holland isn’t listed as a cast member for the show so, while this is a cool idea, it probably won’t happen.
Another idea is that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is somehow worthy of Mjolnir, Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) hammer. This would seem to change the current idea that Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is worthy of the mythical hammer.
All the confirmed episodes have us on hanging on by a thread as we wait for August to come around. Until then, we have all the fan theories and episode ideas to keep us busy!
