Jonathan Creek is back tonight on BBC One for an Easter special and while we're so very glad for Mr Creek and his duffel coat to be coming back, we don't want it to be another one night stand with the master of mysteries.
We want Jonathan Creek back for another full series and here's exactly the reasons why.
Alan Davies
When Jonathan Creek first appeared on TV, the character had the potential to be a poor Sherlock knock off. Thankfully though, the writers of the show managed to imbue him with enough quirk to hold off an such comparisons. All of this would have been in vain though without the brilliantly subtle performance by Davies.
A little known stand-up comedian before he took not the part, Davies has since become one of the UK's favourite TV personality as a part of panel comedy show QI and we just want to see more Alan on our TV screens.
There's Nothing Quite Like It
While Sherlock might have scratched the itch that we have for a good mystery that doesn't involve a police department, we still miss the oddness and complexity of Jonathan Creek. The mysteries that awaited the duffel coated wonder didn't always involve a dastardly killing, with the occasional robbery breaking up the murderous monopoly.
Creek's puzzles were more like that, with his crimes more like a wonderfully bizarre Rubik's cube. They weren't just about the who, they were about the how. There's no other show out there that has such labyrinthine misdemeanours that need solving.
Sherlock's Short Series
As we mentioned earlier, Sherlock has come along and become an absolute phenomenon. The trouble is though that while the show has been consistently brilliant, we've only had six episodes of the show so far and we just want more interesting criminal conundrums to solve.
It's Quirky
The crime TV world has become a much more sombre place after the emergence of the Scandinavian dramas that we've all become so fond of. While that's something we largely appreciate and a factor that has led to the utterly magnificent Broadchurch, sometimes we just want something a little more casual.
It's why Castle is always a nice source of fun and it's the reason why the comedy flourishes that have always made Jonathan Creek something a little different are need more than ever before.
