When it comes to making a name for yourself in the entertainment industry, those working in comedy have to work incredibly hard. So, when somebody like Jess Robinson takes in the spotlight, it’s fantastic to see such a talent find her place in the world of showbusiness. Now, she’s been chatting exclusively with Female First, and came up with her Top 5 Tips On Breaking The Entertainment Industry as a woman. Check out her fantastic advice below!
1) Be positive about other women! Females in comedy and entertainment have a tough enough time trying to break through glass ceilings, fight to get places on panel shows and equal out the gender pay gap! Don’t snipe and bitch. Don’t body shame. Support and remember the sisterhood. We girls should stick together.
2) Be yourself. Sounds ridiculous coming from an impressionist doesn’t it?! There’s a lot of competition out there and it’s really hard to find your place. Find a USP… remember you’re unique in your own way. Also, be true to yourself. I’m still learning this and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but it’s important that you don’t allow yourself to be pushed into doing things that don’t feel right for you.
3) Be kind to yourself. I know this is so hard. I struggle with it every day. Like many performers I feel like a fraud and worry about not being good enough. I was going to label this one believe in yourself, but that can be easier said than done. So at the very least, be kind to yourself!
4) Get yourself out there and challenge yourself. Whether you’re doing open mic spots to try out material, making a showreel, writing songs or going on tour, it’s really important to promote yourself, keep reinventing and being creative and get your stuff out there.
5) Hard work. So much of success is down to luck – being in the right place at the right time. There’s so much that is out of your control, but put the work in, so when opportunities come up, you’re ready. And at the very least, if things don’t go as planned, you’ll know that you put your all into it and gave it your best shot!
