The fifth season of the hit crime drama continues on Five tonight. In this instalment, an investigation into a city councilmans murder uncovers corruption at high levels and another body. When councilman Chad Bridges is found stabbed to death in a vacant house on salubrious waterfront community Cobalt Drive, it is a shock to the residents of the usually crime-free neighbourhood. Not what you bargain for when you buy your chunk of the American dream, remarks Tripp. What could have led someone to end the councilmans life? A clue is found when a check of his briefcase yields a print leading to neighbour Gary Logan, who has a record for petty theft. Did Logan upgrade his crimes to murder? He is certainly up to something, as Natalia and Calleigh discover when they visit him at home and find him hurriedly packing his belongings into boxes. Logans story is that he spotted the body through the window and took the opportunity to steal a few things from the briefcase, but he looks guilty when the CSIs spot a freshly dug hole in his garden and find evidence that a months-old corpse has recently been stored there. While Calleigh and Natalia attempt to identify this second victim, Wolfe continues to work on the Bridges case. It transpires that the county is forcing residents of the street to move out under the Eminent Domain law the land is being reclaimed to be used in a lucrative development overseen by the shady William Preston, and the angry residents are only getting half of the value of their properties. Horatio confronts Preston and asks him about his plans for the land, but the developer claims that the work will only benefit the city. Horatio is not convinced...Back at the lab, Delko and Wolfe have been looking into vandalism reports from Cobalt Drive over the past year. The evidence leads them to resident Timothy Nash, who admits that Preston paid him $50,000 to commit the vandalism and consequently raise the areas crime rate. When Horatio confronts Preston about it, the developer smugly denies everything but is stunned when another resident appears brandishing a gun and threatening revenge on the man who has cost him everything. Horatio manages to talk the man down, begging him: I want you to let me worry about this. Horatio later finds out that the judge who declared the land blighted and eligible for Eminent Domain is none other than Judge Ratner, an old nemesis who managed to get away with another crime some time ago. The judge thinks that Horatio is merely trying to get even with him for evading the previous charges, but Horatio believes that he is onto something. It is not long before evidence comes to light that confirms his suspicions and leads him to thegrim circumstances that led to both murders... Also this week, Horatio is forced to caution Wolfe when the hot-headed young CSI loses his temper at a police officer; and Natalia continues to find working in close proximity to Nick somewhat distracting.
