Now, the man with a maid improbably named Vaginica Ceaman, has an ITV1 show dedicated all to himself.Starting on Sunday 22nd April This is David Gest – a six part fly on the wall documentary series - gets an exclusive behind the scenes insight into the American music producer’s incredible life, unearthing the truth behind the tall tales and providing the only up close and personal glimpse into the man who has intrigued the nation. Since he left the jungle in December last year, David has taken up residence at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London with the ITV cameras accompanying him as he goes about his day to day mad cap life. “I decided to stay in the UK because I lived here from ’92 to ’94 and I loved it, and the reaction has been so incredible, the people are so warm, so why not stay where you’re loved?” says David. “I also like clotted cream.” Speaking from his huge superstar bed David says: “I’m not a diva but I’m definitely someone who you need to have extra mileage points for to get into the club.” Loyal body guard and all round right hand man, Imad, has been part of David’s entourage since he was married to Liza Minnelli. He takes care of David’s every whim, even pointing out David’s pimples.

“Imad has a heart of gold but the waist of a whale,” says David. “He was Liza and my security guard and he’s a very good friend and very protective of me.”

As the camera crew follow David around his vast hotel suite, it’s not long before they’re causing him grief as they tread mud across the plush carpet whilst he’s on the phone to his agent Jane.

“I have a bunch of idiots doing the cameras,” he shouts “from now on it’s shoes off for you guys, I’m back to being anal retentive again!”

The master of self promotion is keen to meet the British public, so he tries to walk everywhere and say hello to people. If he can’t walk he’ll just hang out the car window and say hello that way.

In programme one David is kept busy with photo shoots for an advertising campaign, and to appeal to British eccentricity he is dressed up as a pearly king then a polo player, where he has to mount a horse in Hyde Park. As he struggles to get into the saddle he shouts: “I’m used to riding Western style!” so he gets himself a lasso to put a true twist to proceedings.

Next stop is Cadogan Hall where David’s ‘Soul Spectacular’ music shows are taking place. In his profession as a music producer he has excelled at getting his wealth of contacts and celebrity friends to take to the stage in special concerts. But he’s not impressed when he arrives just hours before the live show to find no backing singers or organisers. He’s dragged new friend and fellow I’m A Celebrity… contestant Matt Willis along with him for the day, but Matt was only supposed to be catching up with David for half an hour.

An exasperated Matt says: “David has a way of making you do stuff so if you say no he makes you feel bad. I was supposed to meet my girlfriend in town to go shopping but he won’t let me leave!”

“He’s now my PA!” says David as he hands Matt the phone and gets him to make his calls once the backing singers have arrived. It’s not long before David is distracted from his duties as a producer when one of the female singers Tanya catches his eye.

“Do you see anyone sleeping besides me? No! Of course I’m looking for a partner, I’m looking for somebody who knows how to bounce on the bed.” David says.

The show is a sell out and after such a success David seizes his chance and asks 25-year-old Tanya out on a date – and she agrees.

But getting David ready for a night out is never easy, as he’s very particular about his hair.

As David explains to producer, Marty, “I have a problem with that balding spot in the centre, I have a problem the back of my hair thinning. I want a hairdresser from a hip salon..who knows about my hair.” The stylist must also know which shade of black eyeshadow David prefers..and it’s not applied to his eyes.

It’s not only his hair David is fussy about, his personal hygiene is paramount. His bathroom is full of vitamins and supplements and he’s constantly cleaning his teeth.

“I don’t have ANY false teeth” he says. “My teeth are good, I always brush my teeth. Even after cunnilingus I always brush my teeth, but not right away, I wait a minute or two to see if there’s seconds.”

Finally ready for his big date with Tanya, they set off out on the town – but it’s not an ordinary date, he’s taking her to the Dreamgirls film premiere in London’s Leicester Square.

Professing to have known Dreamgirls star Beyoncé since she was a teenager, David is determined to get to see his ‘friend’, and as this is his first red carpet event since his split from Liza Minelli he’s a little nervous.

Imad gives an insight into David’s vulnerable side, saying deep down he’s really quite insecure.

“He’s scared of what the reaction will be in the public eye. Will the public like him or hate him?”

As he works the red carpet it’s clear the British public love him, and he effortlessly pads to camera whilst he waits to say hi to Beyoncé. Mission accomplished he marches off into the cinema with Tanya on his arm.

Was the date a success? Will Tanya have fallen for his eccentric charms, or does she run for the hills?

This is David Gest is an ITV Production for ITV1, produced by Marty Benson. The executive producer is Natalka Znak
