RISK for a first time player is a complicated game. It's something you're going to want to learn to play on a day where you can set a few hours aside and really get to grips with the mechanics. Those new to it are best playing with other first-timers, as they can then learn from one another's mistakes. Once you've got a handle on exactly how to play though, it can be one of the most exciting board games on offer.

Following the release of Monopoly: Game of Thrones edition, the HBO Store now also has on offer a Game of Thrones version of RISK and, as with Monopoly, it's an essential buy for all major fans of the television series and the Song of Ice and Fire novel series.
The Skirmish Edition of the game features one way to play - battle it out with the factions of Houses vying for control of Westeros after King Robert Baratheon's death - whilst in the deluxe you can also oversee Daenerys Targaryen's rise to power in Essos.
Five armies are available to play with - Baratheon, Stark, Lannister, Tyrell and Martell - with each containing 30 small pieces, 15 medium pieces and a castle.
It's worth noting that if you splash out on the Deluxe Edition of the game, there are along with the two game boards and different ways to play, more than 650 player pieces, seven sculpted armies, seven player boards and 28 character cards.
If you're a casual watcher, then the standard RISK should be the direction you step in. This is after all simply the RISK game with a Westeros map to play on, and figures based on Game of Thrones characters and Houses. There are no differing rules - it's simply a great version of an old classic.
For fans of the series, this can get extremely competitive very quickly. You'll take just minutes to slip into the roles of the armies you're fighting for control with - slippery and cunning for the Lannisters and fighting for your lives with the Starks.
