The Apprentice this week in many ways was similar to the first task I participated in last year. The first thing we did was choose a team name – and we had to manufacture burgers and sell them to the public. A classic memory from that day was us mislabelling burgers ‘organic’ when they were anything but – and me screaming ‘buy your burgers here’ to a field of literally nobody!
The task for this years candidates was to design and manufacture doughnuts – and to sell them to the public as well as a corporate client. Lord Sugar also mixed up the teams – so some interesting personalities moving around!
First things first – they decided on those team names! Normally done in week one – the producers in their wisdom decided to have the teams choose names once the teams had been mixed – and so the names are…drumroll...
Team Typhoon and Team Collaborative
What awful names! Especially Team Collaborative – They really could of come up with better options! Team Typhoon was lead by Camilla – and they decided on doing a ‘tea on a doughnut’ British theme. Team Collaborative, lead by Tom – decided for a more high end doughnut – with a sweet and savoury option. The predicted mayhem ensued – with a highlight of Frank tasting the alleged ‘high end’ doughnut with hot sauce on it – the boy could barely breath! Jasmine made the decision to go with hot sauce as she felt it complemented chocolate.
When pitching to a corporate client – Kurran once again froze whilst speaking. It’s like a fog goes over his head when he speaks about any product. It makes you feel sorry for him but this cant keep happening or he will be fired within a couple of weeks!
The manufacture process didn’t seem to go too badly for either team – although quality control of doughnuts was always going to be a problem! After both teams failed to sell all their items to their corporate clients – the race was on to sell as many as they could to the public. A person to note for his salesmanship was Kayode – he was charismatic and excited when selling dodgy looking doughnuts – and I predict his personality will carry him far in this process.
Back in the boardroom – Kurran walked in wearing a sling – and it transpired he had broken his arm when arm wrestling one of the other candidates! The next few weeks will not be even harder for him if he survives. Lord Sugar highlighted Alex by saying ‘hello – were you on this team. We haven’t seen much of Alex – I hope we see more or he runs the risk of being seen not to contribute to the tasks.
The final scores came in at Team Collaborative with a profit of £68.08 – and Team Typhoon marching to victory with a profit of £221.04.
After much debate about Toms leadership skills and Jasmines decision to choose hot sauce – Tom bought Jasmine and Frank back in – highlighting that Frank contributed the least on the team and was emotional on the task.
In what was the most fiery final boardroom to date – Jasmine showed herself to be very articulate and able to attack her fellow candidates with ease. Tom came across stilted and he wasn’t the best project manager. But it was poor Frank who was fired – insisting he wasn’t an emotional person yet the tears could be seen in his eyes.
On to week four!
