Last night saw the moment EastEnders viewers and soap fans had been waiting for for the last ten months. The reveal of Lucy Beale's killer in a flashback episode that explained where all our suspects were on the night Lucy's life was snuffed out.

11-year-old Bobby Beale was shown to be the one who clobbered his sister over the head with a musical jewellery box whilst his father Ian, Ian's fiancée Denise and Bobby's sister Cindy lay sleeping upstairs, oblivious to what was going on.

Calling his adoptive mother Jane Beale over to the house, he told her that "Whatever she says, she started it. She made everyone unhappy."

Viewers are divided on the outcome. Some claim it's a cop-out. They're annoyed that it wasn't a member of the cast who was highlighted as a suspect throughout the story and they feel duped. And perhaps that's our problem as viewers. We don't like to be tricked. But perhaps that's also where the genius lies.

Ensuring that most ends tied up nicely and explained just why each character was acting shifty, Dominic Treadwell-Collins has done the impossible in keeping a storyline so closely guarded for almost a year now, and for that he should be commended.

But we still have some little clues and plot holes that may lead us to come to a new conclusion. Did Bobby really kill his sister, or did he just land a blow that rendered her unconscious before running up to his room, letting the real killer finish her off before Jane turned up?

When Jane came to the house, the door was ajar. This is odd because we heard Lucy click the door shut when she came into the house, so the only explanation for this would be that Bobby opened the door so Jane could enter - she was of course not a member of the household at the time and so may not have had a key to let herself in.

A few questions still need answering. Just what was DC Emma Summerhayes referring to on her way to the hospital with Max Branning, when she spat "You know" at him after he asked her why she had been acting so strangely?

Who sent the musical jewellery box wrapped up as a gift at Christmas for Beth, and why was Cindy so worried when she opened it up?

What plan did Lucy initially have to run away with Ben Mitchell and Jay Brown to America, and why were they going to do it?

How did Lauren and Emma click together the pieces and solve the case - is there more evidence to come out that we've yet to see?

And what happens next? Ian has re-married the woman who's known the circumstances surrounding his daughter's death for the past 10 months. Will she take the blame for Bobby or will the truth truly be outed? Could the family put all this past them to protect their own and keep things a secret forever?

We have a tremendous amount of fallout to deal with going forward but that just makes things all the more exciting.

Tonight sees EastEnders go live for a full 30 minute episode as we see Ian coming to terms with Jane's revelation, and (hopefully) more information on just how Jane covered up the entire tragic event.

Dominic Treadwell-Collins has promised it's going to be emotional, so keep the tissues close, and tune in at 8pm on BBC One to watch everything unfold.
