Faye is dreaming about Joseph. She sees him standing at the end of a corridor and despite running she can't catch him. She screams until...she wakes. It's a nightmare but it has crystallised a thought for her. Faye misses Joseph and she wants him back.
Maddy, Donna and Maria arrive at Holby after another of Tom's crazy drunken nights. They might have to stay out of Ric's way as from today he plans to randomly breathalyse the staff for traces of alcohol.
Steve Hewitt's wife Kathy accuses Ric and his staff of being negligent and causing her husband's death. She has brought lawyers and is demanding an inquiry into the fact that her husband had been refused treatment earlier in the day. This was due to Ric's zero tolerance policy and, having seen Maddy and the team arrive at work looking worse for wear, Kathy says that she doesn't feel that his staff are capable of practising. Ric has faith in them and explains that he's going to test randomly for alcohol consumption. That will show any inquiry that he is being totally fair and open.
Michael and Annalese arrive at Holby. Things are very tense between them and Annalese is quiet. Michael looks at her with concern. Tom crashes into the locker room where he finds Maddy, Maria and Donna. They say that they had a great night but that there is a problem - Ric has started random alcohol testing at Holby.
They all look concerned, knowing that they will definitely fail any test and Maddy points out that if they refuse to take it they will appear guilty.
Faye arrives at Holby and talks to Linden about how much she is missing Joseph. She decides that life's too short and that she needs to get Joseph back. But as she tries to talk to him, a smug Jac hobbles by and interrupts them. Jac knows how to push Faye's buttons and so Faye leaves the conversation for the time being.
A junior doctor and a porter are taking a breathalyser test. It isn't compulsory but Ric makes it obvious that he would take a dim view of it if they back down.
Elliot is still unsure about Martha's new husband after finding pictures of Vegas show girls on his laptop. Elliot tells Martha about the pictures, who explains that the pictures are actually for his work and that the girls are actually boys. Elliot doesn't approve.
Ric and Jayne are still in a meeting with Kathy and her lawyer. Ric is defending his staff as they wait for the results from the coroner, but whatever the outcome Kathy lets Ric know that she wants to go to court. How can turning a patient away be deemed good practice? Ric explains the reasoning behind his policy and tells her that he has introduced alcohol tests for staff. Kathy asks if these tests are compulsory to which Ric says that they are not but that she is welcome to join him to observe.
Ric gathers everyone together and explains what he is planning to do. Maddy and Donna look nervous- they might lose their jobs. Ric explains that people will be randomly checked and everyone leaves the room. Ric turns to Maddy and asks her to be first. Her face drops and she tries to explain that she has a million things to do but Ric says that it will only take a minute and that she should report back in ten.
Maddy is worrying and Tom gives her a breath freshener spray to send the device off the scale. She quickly sprays it before entering the room. Kathy watches over the tests but is questioning people as to whether they had any involvement in the death of her husband. Ric asks her to leave as this is unprofessional behaviour.
Maddy's breath test is off the scale as predicted and she explains that she used a breath freshener as she had garlic the night before. Ric tries to test her a few more times but much higher than it should be and a confused Ric decides there must be something wrong with the device - Maddy is saved.
Michael is trying to talk with Annalese who is still in total shock over yesterday's events as she is responsible for the death of Steve Hewitt. Michael is determined to save his wife, but he is also thinking that this couldn't have come at a better time for him as Annalese had found out about his infidelities and it will get him back into her good books. Michael knows that the coroner will want to look into the tape recordings of the procedure where he will discover Annalese's mistake.
Annalese and Michael look over the tape and discover that they can't actually see her mistake, but that it wouldn't take a genius to work out what happened. Michael explains that he will wipe the tape but Annalese doesn't want him to, she wants to come clean. Michael tells her that no one suspects that a mistake has occurred in the theatre, but Annalese runs to tell Jayne. Michael chases after her and tells her that she needs to learn to live with it, or throw away her career. Annalese listens to Michael and backs down.
Kathy and her lawyer are not letting this go. She explains to Ric that she still believes there's a big difference between random breathalyser tests on staff and refusing patients treatment. She wants her lawyers to look at documentation of the operation and to have access to the staff who were involved. Ric and Jayne say this is impossible - all the documentation is on its way to the coroner's office, and if they did wish to make a formal complaint then they would have to go through the right channels. Things get very tense but Ric and Jayne hold their ground. Kathy's lawyer explains that his office has got hold of the research that Ric presented to the board on zero tolerance. His office has examined the figures and facts and they don't believe they hold water. In fact they can disprove the figures. This is the set of results that Tom researched for Ric in record time a few weeks before.
Annalese is in a total daze, Ric asks her for a breathalyser test and she registers highly. Ric looks shocked and wants to know how she failed the test. Annalese confesses that she drank a full bottle of vodka the night before but Ric can't believe it. There must be something wrong.
Faye has been trying to get Joseph's attention all day but Jac keeps getting in the way. She finally gets a minute with him and explains that she misses him. Joseph is confused, he thought she never wanted to see him again. Faye explains that she was hurt but that she can forgive him.
Michael finds out about Annalese failing the test and explains to Ric that he had no intention of letting her operate. He lies. He says he knew she had been up drinking the night before as one of her good friends in the US had died. Ric lets this slide.
Ric passes Tom - the research for his zero tolerance paper is rock solid isn't it? Tom assures Ric that it is, but as a satisfied Ric heads off, we see that Tom looks worried- he may have got away with the random alcohol testing today but Ric has discovered that his research is highly suspect.
