Maddy is happy to hear that she has an interview for the new position she has applied for. It is going to be a great day for Maddy, or so she thinks. Ric passes her and she thanks him for putting her forward. Ric explains that it was Linden who convinced him to put her forward and says that he hopes Maddy will learn from her mistakes and be a great doctor. Before Ric can say any more a stab victim is brought in and needs his attention. Maddy notices a figure wandering the wards. It’s Hannah, her sister, who has been released from prison after serving her sentence for killing her own child. Hannah offers to buy Maddy a coffee but Maddy’s not sure – AAU is busy and she has ward rounds to complete. Hannah insists and Maddy goes along as she has missed her sister.
Michael is taking his separation from Annalese in a bad way. He is staying at a hotel and hasn’t seen Annalese or his children in two weeks. He tries to call Annalese but the line is dead. Arriving at work, Michael is depressed and really doesn’t want to be there. Donna sees him and says that she’s heard about the Hewitt settlement – Michael realises that this means that everyone knows. Donna asks about Annalese and Michael says that she’s fine but doesn’t mention that they have separated. As he walks onto Keller he notices Annalese’s possessions from her locker in a box - someone cleared it out and left them for him. Michael writes his home address on the box and leaves it for someone to post.
Ben is due his cardiac check up but Martha is worried – check up for what? Elliot assures her that these are just routine tests and nothing to worry about. Elliot runs some tests on Ben and gives him a clean bill of health – there are no problems arising from his cardiac condition. But Ben is obviously far from OK.
Hannah and Maddy are in the café. Hannah looks great and she explains that she is back on her own two feet now. She’s got a flat, a job as a florist, and has been clean from heroin for over a year now. Maddy knows that Hannah wouldn’t just stop by for a chat and knows that something is up. Hannah explains that she needs Maddy’s help. In prison she bought herself security from another inmate as she was a target for being a child killer and now she has to repay the debt. There’s a girl that has been involved in a knife fight and who needs attention. The stabbing happened a few hours ago but she hasn’t come into the hospital because she didn’t want the police notified. Hannah needs Maddy to do this one thing so that her new life can begin.
Donna passes the outgoing mail point and spots Annalese’s box waiting to be posted to Michael’s house – Donna thinks something is up. Michael returns to HolbyCare – his previous calm starting to leave him. When a nurse takes too long to do something Michael snaps.
Maddy is not prepared to risk her career for Hannah again. Hannah gets upset and says that she is scared the girl will try and ruin her future if she doesn’t help her. Maddy agrees but says that this is the last time she will help Hannah.
Michael and Donna operate on a patient together. The atmosphere is tense and awkward. Donna feels the need to fill the silences with inane chatter – anything to avoid talking about the obvious. Whilst operating, Michael receives a phone call – it’s his children’s school. One of them is sick and needs to go home - but they can’t get hold of Annalese. Michael is in the middle of the operation but will be there as soon as possible.
Maddy heads out to the car park where the stab victim, Chantelle, is in the back seat of Hannah’s car. She is in a bad way and needs to be brought inside as soon as possible. Chantelle is scared she will be arrested if they take her into the hospital. Maddy promises her that it will be low key. Maddy calls in a favour with Linden and asks if he would mind spending a couple of hours in the treatment room this afternoon overseeing a patient who has fallen through some glass. Linden agrees and Maddy assesses Chantelle’s stab wound, calling Daisha to assist.
Michael leaves theatre and bumps into Connie who wants to know where he is going. Connie doesn’t seem too impressed that the whole situation is affecting his work. He snaps back at her saying that she has no idea what he is going through and needs to back off. Michael gets a call from the school, Annalese has picked the children up.
With Martha distracted, Ben admits to Elliot that he’s been having problems with his sight. He hasn’t said anything because he thought it was nothing. The real reason is that he’s terrified of what’s wrong with him. Ben wants to protect Martha as they have been through so much in the last few months. Elliot understands and gets Ben an appointment card for further tests.
Linden gets a call regarding the other stab victim and realises that the two stabbing incidents are related. Linden takes one look at the room and knows that Maddy has been lying to him about the patient and that Hannah is Maddy’s sister. Maddy pleads her case and explains that she’s protecting her sister. Chantelle’s situation deteriorates and as Ric attends to her he recognises Hannah from when she was in Holby before. Ric stabilises Chantelle but wants answers from Maddy. Have the police been notified about the stabbing? Maddy tells Ric everything and is touched when Hannah tries in vain to defend her. Maddy knows she’s blown it with Ric.
Donna meets with Michael, he is a total mess and Donna can’t help but feel some responsibility. She can see how much Michael is hurting and she feels guilty about the whole affair – she would never have wanted to wreck his marriage. Donna and Michael head to the bar where Donna apologises to him for everything. Michael doesn’t want Donna to blame herself, he takes responsibility for his own actions. Donna does her best to cheer Michael up but he just seems to get drunker as time goes on. Donna gets him a cab and he asks her back to the hotel for company, but she turns him down.
Ric has no choice but to inform the police, who arrive to talk to Chantelle. Chantelle says that she will get her revenge on Hannah. Maddy receives a text saying that her interview has been withdrawn.
